During the Age of Bishops, Ben and Randall discovered ancient writings about the Lesser Pantheon, a group of long-forgotten gods.
Caravan guards
Ben and Randall met while serving as guards for a travelling caravan. Randall eventually told Ben that he’d been given a task by a mysterious entity called the Swarm: to find the location of its last memory. Ben decided to help Randall with this quest.
While chatting to a merchant they were escorting, Ben and Randall described the Swarm’s last memory. The merchant believed he knew the location: ruins found on Sacred Haven, off the coast of Marid’s Bay. The Merchant had been there to deliver goods for a wizard named Alaxar, who was living on the island and researching its history.
Sacred Haven
Ben and Randall travelled to Sacred Haven, and met with Alaxar. The wizard mentioned a book he found on the island - The God Wars - but refused to say much about its contents. And when Ben and Randall asked too many questions, Alaxar asked them to leave the island so he could continue his research in peace.
Hal then relayed a message to Randall from the Swarm: retrieve the God Wars book. So Randall and Ben stayed on the island. They attempted to steal the book, but Alaxar caught them and imprisoned them.
The Servant
Hal freed Ben and Randall after Alaxar left them to continue his research. They found the wizard while he was busy conducting his “research”. Alaxar had opened a portal to an entity similar to the Swarm, but seemed to be trying to control the power, rather than contacting it as Randall had done.
Ben and Randall ambushed Alaxar while he was mid ritual, breaking his concentration. The power he was attempting to control burst free, destroying Alaxar and most of the room around them. Before Randall and Ben were annihilated, Hal appeared and channelled the Swarm’s power to protect them.
When Randall and Ben regained their senses, they found themselves in the presence of a portal to the Swarm, and another portal to a different domain. The Swarm seemed to be communicating with a being through the second portal, apparently named “the Servant”. Although the Servant seemed both confused and angry, and it closed the portal leading to its domain.
Rewards
Amongst the rubble, Ben and Randall found The God Wars, which contained details on the Swarm and several other gods who together formed the Lesser Pantheon.
Along with the God Wars Book, Ben and Randall also found some of Alaxar’s research notes. After Alaxar had visited Sacred Haven and found The God Wars, he had become interested in harnessing the power of the Lesser Pantheon. He’d already found a way to contact the Servant, and had also discovered the possible location of a portal to the Dragon.
Amongst Alaxar’s possessions, Ben found his Rapier of Vengeance, and Randall his mantle, ring, horn, and bracers.
A new quest
After being informed of the contents of the God Wars book and Alaxar’s research notes, the Swarm seemed to remember much about itself. It gave Ben and Randall a new task: find a way to contact each of the Lesser Pantheon, leaving the Archfey - who the Swarm mistrusted - to last.
Unable to replicate Alaxar’s ritual for summoning the Servant, Ben and Randall began searching for the portal to the Dragon. Along the way, they handed over the God Wars book to Matthew, a prominent religious scholar in Soleme. Matthew has started spreading knowledge of the Lesser Pantheon throughout Southwest Iparra, and has attributed its discovery to Ben and Randall.
