Sigmond
Ben opens the door to an old man who introduces himself as Sigmond - a wandering priest immediately recognised by Gregan. Sigmond says he grew up with Gregan in Caister. He also notices Randall’s Pandemona holy symbol, and Randall claims to be a junior priest.
Gregan’s wares
The PCs investigate Gregan’s wagon. Randall picks the lock, and inside they find foodstuffs and textiles. They quickly re-lock the wagon before being joined by Gregan, Sigmond, and Zane.
Gregan begrudgingly opens his wagon, and Randall requests to see inside a crate towards the back. Gregan refuses, so Randall tries to open the crate himself, but realises it’s sealed. Despite Gregan’s protests, the PCs attempt to force open the sealed crate. This triggers a magical defence mechanism, which blasts them back and emits a loud whine.
Gregan admits to transporting magical goods for a secret client. Angered by the situation, Randall gets Hal to retrieve the stashed magical rod. A frustrated Gregan then says that the rod is a weapon he’d stashed at the shelter for his own safety.
Gregan’s client
Sigmond urges Gregan to be more forthcoming, and then provides an explanation himself: Sigmond is a Monotheist, and Gregan’s client; Gregan’s secret magical goods are spell scrolls intended for use by Monotheist clerics; the delivery point is a Monotheist camp near Iladence, a day’s ride from the shelter; and Gregan hid the true nature of the job because they’ve had difficulties finding guards willing to help Monotheists.
Gregan promises additional pay to make up for the trouble. The PCs agree to continue working for the merchant, but Zane says he’ll quit once they reach the Monotheist camp. Hal then notices a mob of goblins moving through the area, and Ben urges the group to get back on the road. Gregan agrees, and so they depart in the night.
The road
While travelling, Sigmond asks Randall about his religious teacher. Randall instead presents his exciting origin story. Sigmond refers to his own teacher as a “great man” named Zafir, who’s surpassed what Sigmond could ever hope to achieve himself.
Several hours into daylight, they reach a shabby Monotheist camp. At the entrance, they see the aftermath of a goblin massacre, and some Monotheists picking their way through the remains.
